Gouverneur Warren was Chief of Engineers of the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Gettysburg. Quoting from Stackpole, They Met at Gettysburg: ...After leaving [George] Meade
and [Daniel] Sickles on the latter's front,
Warren rode over to Little Round Top to have a look. To his amazement
he found it empty except for a handful of signal personnel who
for some reason were packing up to pull out.
Warren lost no time in plugging the gap. By extreme good fortune
Barnes' division of V Corps was seen advancing rapidly
along the western base of Little Round Top to counterattack and
neutralize the early Confederate success in breaking Sickles'
line and forcing III Corps back.
In the name of the Commanding
General, Warren detached Strong Vincent's
brigade and directed it to the crest of Little Round Top just
in time to meet and repulse with the bayonet the extreme right
regiment of John B. Hood's division, which had
already crossed the shoulder of big Round Top and was moving
rapidly to take Little Round Top and consolodate its gains |
