Edwin M. Stanton replaced Simon Cameron as Secretary of War in Abraham Lincoln's Cabinet. He was dismissed in 1868 by President Andrew Johnson in defiance of the recently passed Tenure of Office Act. Johnson's action led to his impeachment by the House but the Senate failed to convict him, falling just one vote short of the two-thirds majority required. |
