Henry Halleck was nicknamed "Old Brains" because of his scholarly approach to strategy. Halleck was brought from the West in 1862 by Abraham Lincoln to replace George McClellan as General-in-Chief of the Federal Armies, and served in that capacity until replaced in 1864 by Ulysses S. Grant. |
