David McM. Gregg commanded the Second Division of Alfred Pleasonton's cavalry corps. Arriving from Hanover, PA, on the afternoon of 2 July, Gregg's division supported troops from George Sykes' V Corps who were skirmishing with James Walker's Stonewall Brigade on Brinkerhoff's Ridge.
On 3 July, Gregg's division, along with George A. Custer's 1st Michigan Brigade from Judson Kilpatrick's Third Division, outnumbered 2-to-1, checked J. E. B. Stuart's cavalry in a fierce battle along the Hannover Road. |
