Major General Abner Doubleday

Abner Doubleday commanded the Third Division of John Reynold's I Corps. After Reynolds was killed near Herbst's Woods on McPherson's Ridge, command of I Corps passed to him. He handled the corps well during the remainder of the action on Seminary Ridge and the subsequent retreat to Cemetery Ridge. Nevertheless, George Meade

relieved him of duty after the Battle.

Doubleday is perhaps best known as the inventor of baseball, a claim of dubious merit.
